[Im stillen]1 Klostergarten 
Eine bleiche Jungfrau ging;
Der Mond beschien sie trübe,
An ihrer Wimper hing 
Die Träne zarter Liebe.

"O wohl mir, daß gestorben 
Der treue Buhle mein!
Ich darf ihn wieder lieben:
Er wird ein Engel sein, 
Und Engel darf ich lieben."

Sie trat mit zagem Schritte 
Wohl zum [Mariabild]2;
Es stand [im lichten]3 Scheine,
Es sah so muttermild
Herunter auf die Reine.

Sie sank zu seinen Füßen, 
Sah auf mit Himmelsruh',
Bis ihre Augenlider
Im Tode fielen zu:
[Ihr]4 Schleier wallte nieder.

2. La monja

Al tranquil jardí del convent
caminava una pàl·lida donzella;
il·luminada per la llum somorta de la lluna,
humides estaven les seves celles
per les llàgrimes d’un tendre amor.

“Oh, que contenta estic
de què el meu fidel amant s’hagi mort!
Ara puc estimar-te de nou:
ell serà ara un àngel
i jo tinc el dret d’estimar els àngels.”

Amb passos hesitants es dirigí
vers la imatge de la Verge Maria;
ella estava voltada de llum
i amb un aire maternal esguardà
a baix, la casta donzella.

Ella caigué als seus peus,
amb una pau celestial esguardà 
cap amunt fins que les seves parpelles 
en la mort es tancaren:
onejant, el seu vel caigué a terra.

tu el meu món on jo visc,
el cel en el que jo floto,
oh tu la meva tomba, dins la qual
enterro eternament el meu dolor!
Tu ets el repòs, tu ets la pau,
ets el que el cel m'ha atorgat.
Que tu m'estimis, em fa digne,
el teu esguard em transfigura,
estimant-me m'eleves per sobre meu,
el meu bon esperit, el meu millor jo!
