English translations of Noční violy (Night violets), opus 43

by Josef Bohuslav Foerster (1859 - 1951)

1. Du hast in meinem Herzen
 (Sung text)
by Josef Bohuslav Foerster (1859 - 1951), "Du hast in meinem Herzen", op. 43 (Noční violy (Night violets)) no. 2
Language: German (Deutsch)
  Du hast in meinem Herzen
Ein reines Feuer erweckt,
Dran hab' ich erlosch'ne Kerzen
Wieder angesteckt:

  Kleine Liebeslieder
Sind wieder erwacht,
Leben und leuchten wieder
Nach langer Nacht.

  Leuchten in reinen Flammen,
Fürchte dich nicht davor,
Ihr Summen und Singen zusammen
Giebt einen lieblichen Chor.

  So mögen die Engel singen,
Die um Maria stehn,
Mit gefalteten Schwingen,
Und aufs schlummernde Kindchen sehn.

1. In my heart you have
Language: English
  In my heart you have
Woken a pure fire,
By it I have relighted
Candles that had gone out:

  Little love songs
Have woken again,
They live and shine once more
After a long night.

  They shine in pure flames,
Do not be frightened by them,
Their combined humming and singing
Produces a lovely chorus.

  Thus may sing the angels
That stand around Mary
With folded wings
And gaze upon the slumbering [Christ]child.
