Die Blätter fallen, fallen wie von weit, 
als welkten in den Himmeln ferne Gärten; 
sie fallen mit verneinender Gebärde. 
Und in den Nächten fällt die schwere Erde 
aus allen Sternen in die Einsamkeit. 
Wir alle fallen. Diese Hand da fällt. 
Und sieh die andre an: es ist in allen. 
Und doch ist einer, welcher dieses Fallen 
unendlich sanft in seinen Händen hält.

Le foglie cadono, come da lontano,
come appassite in remoti giardini celesti,
quasi un gesto che nega, la caduta accompagna.
E, nelle notti, cade la greve terra,
in solitudine, giù da ogni stella.
Cadiamo tutti. Questa mano cade
e, come questa, ogni altra cosa che vedi.
E tuttavia c'è Uno, che questo cadere
con  dolcezza infinita nelle sue mani accoglie.
