Als ob ich fröhlich sei,
Doch heimlich Tränen dringen,
Da wird das Herz mir frei.

Spielt draußen Frühlingsluft,
Der Sehnsucht Lied erschallen
Aus ihres [Kerkers]2 Gruft.

[Da]3 lauschen alle Herzen,
Und alles ist erfreut,

Bé que de vegades puc cantar
com si estigués alegre,
però secretament em vessen les llàgrimes
i això m’allibera el cor.

Els rossinyols,
quan a fora juga l’aire primaveral,
deixen ressonar el cant de nostàlgia
de llur presó sepulcral.

Llavors tots els cors escolten,
i tothom s’alegra,
però ningú percep el dolor
en el seu cant, la seva profunda pena.
