Ich habe nichts mehr zu sagen, Ich habe alles gesagt. Nun will ich klingend zum letzten Takt Meine gute Geige zerschlagen. Zerschlagen -- und wandern wieder Ins Land, woher ich kam, Wo ich in Jugendtagen vernahm Den Traum vom Lied der Lieder. Ihn träumen will ich wieder Abseits und ganz allein -- Es muß voll tiefen Friedens sein, Der Traum vom Lied der Lieder.

No tinc res més a dir, ja ho he dit tot. Ara, fent sonar el darrer compàs, vull destrossar el meu estimat violí. Destrossar-lo – i recórrer de nou el país d’on vaig venir, on als dies de la meva joventut vaig copsar el somni del cant dels cants. Vull tornar-ho a somiar apartat i tot sol – el somni del cant dels cants deu estar ple d’una profunda pau.

Tot el carrer estava tranquil i només la teva finestra es veia encara rogenca, a la teva estança éreu tan sols tu, tu i la mort. La nit era fosca, ennuvolada i arrossegava lentament tot un seguit de fulles seques. La nit em digué: T’estimo, deixa’m entrar. El teu llum s’apagà; jo estava sol. Llavors la meva finestra s’obrí, i per molt temps restàrem ensems, jo i la nit.
