Ineffablement triste était la nuit d'hier ;
La mer [pleurait ; la]1 lune, en sortant de la mer,
[Pâle, me rappelait la blancheur]2 d'une morte,
La mer pleurait ; sa plainte était large et si forte,
Que tout mon cœur semblait pleurer avec la mer.

Les flots, en gémissant, se roulaient sur la dune,
Et, tandis qu'en un ciel brumeux montait la lune,
Ton souvenir, ô morte, [ainsi]3 montait en moi,
Et mon cœur sanglotait et s'élançait vers toi,
