Confirmed with Nicolas-Edme Restif de la Bretonne, La Dernière Aventure d’un homme de quarante-cinq ans, Geneva, 1783. The poem appears as a song text included in a novel, so it is not clear if it is by the author of the novel or if it is an unattributed quotation. The song by Dalvamire attributes the text to Fabre d'Églantine, but we have not yet found corroboration for this attribution. In addition, the first four lines appear in the middle of a longer poem attributed to M. de Saint-Péravi titled "Le Mal d'Amour.
