Es liegt eine Krone im grünen Rhein,
Gezaubert von Gold und von Edelstein,
Und wer sie erhebet vom tiefem Grund,
Den krönt man zu Aachen in selbiger Stund:
Vom Belt bis zur Donau die Lande sind sein,
Dem Kaiser der Zukunft, dem Fürsten am Rhein.
Es liegt eine Leier im grünen Rhein,
Gezaubert von Gold und Elfenbein;
Und wer sie erhebet vom tiefen Grund,
Dem strömen die Lieder vom goldenen Mund.
Der Kranz der Unsterblichkeit wartet sein,
Des Sängers der Zukunft, des Sängers am Rhein.
Ich weiß wo ein Häuschen am grünen Rhein,
Umranket von Reblaub die Fensterlein;
Drin waltet ein Herz so engelgleich,
So arm am Gold und an Unschuld so reich:
Gehörte dies Herz an dem Rheine mir,
Ich gäbe die Krone, die Leier dafür.

Shall at that same hour be crowned in Aachen:
All the lands from the Belt to the Danube are his,
The emperor of the future, the prince by the Rhine.
A lyre lies in the green Rhine,
Magically fashioned of gold and ivory;
And for him who raises it from the depths,
Songs stream from his golden lips.
The wreath of immortality awaits him,
The singer of the future, the singer by the Rhine.
I know of a little house somewhere by the green Rhine,
Its windows wreathed about with grapevines;
Within it presides a heart so like an angel,
So poor in gold and so rich in innocence:
If that heart by the Rhine were mine,
I would gladly give the crown and the lyre for it.
