Wie der Sterne große Schar
Sich im blauen Dunkel weitet
Und die Seele wunderbar,
Die so tief in Schmerzen war,
In das Land des Friedens leitet!
Tiefer atmet meine Brust
Deine selig reinen Wellen,
Klare Nacht! Und unbewußt
Füllt mein Herz aus tiefen Quellen
Sich mit neuer Lebenslust.
Ringsum trugen nah und weit
Menschen ihre schweren Lasten.
Leise hast du sie befreit,
Sorge, Leidenschaft und Streit
Ausgelöscht. Sie dürfen rasten.
Ernste Stille, heilige Ruh,
Fürder durch des Lebens Wirre
Leite meine Wege du,
Führe mich durch Kampf und Irre
Den erlösten Brüdern zu!

How the stars' great host
Stretches itself out in the blue darkness
And wondrously leads my soul,
Which was so deep in pain,
Into the land of peace!
My breast breathes more deeply
Of your blissful, pure waves,
Clear night! And unconsciously
My heart fills itself with new zest for life
From deep wellsprings.
Round about people carried
Their heavy burdens far and wide.
Quietly you have freed them,
Have extinguished care, passion
And strife. They are able to rest.
Solemn stillness, holy peace,
Onward through the confusion of life
May you direct my path,
Lead me through conflict and madness
Toward the redeemed brethren!
