Nur von den Bergen rauschet der Wald
Und mich schauert im Herzensgrunde.

Der Bräutigem küsste die blasse Braut,
die Mutter sprach leis', "Nicht klagen!"
Fort schmettert das Horn durch die Schluchten laut,

Stanza 2, line 4, word 3: in op. 39, Schumann has "schauert's" instead of "schauert"

Al llarg de la muntanya passava un seguici nupcial,
jo sentia cantar els ocells;
llavors resplendiren molts cavallers, sonà el corn de caça,
era una alegre cacera!
I abans que ho pensés, tot es perdé al lluny,
la nit cobrí tot l’entorn,
només el bosc remorejava de les muntanyes,
i jo sentia un calfred fins al fons del cor.
