from Volkslieder (Folksongs)

Warum bist du denn so traurig?
Language: German (Deutsch)
Warum bist du denn so traurig?
Bin ich aller Freuden voll!
Meinst, ich könnte dich verlassen,
Du gefällst mir gar so wohl.

Eh ich dich, mein Kind, will lassen,
Muß der Himmel fallen ein,
Und der Sterne Glanz erblassen
Und der Mond verfinstert sein.

Morgen muß ich von dir reisen,
Abschied nehmen mit Gewalt;
Lustig singen schon die Vögel
Draußen in dem grünen Wald.

Sitzen da zwei Turteltauben
Droben auf dem dürren Ast;
Wo sich zwei Verliebte scheiden,
Da verwelket Laub und Gras.

Laub und Gras, das mag verwelken,
Aber treue Liebe nicht:
Kommst mir wohl aus meinen Augen,
Doch aus meinem Herzen nicht!
