Ihr Morgen tagt;
Weil ohne Trost
Mein Auge weint,
Wann ihm von Ost
Dein Tag erscheint.
Ich such umsonst,
Und wär's auf Knien,
Dich, wo Du thronst,
Herabzuziehn.
Dein ist die Huld
Und mein die Pflicht:
Die Ungeduld
Bewegt Dich nicht.
Drum bleib es Dir
Anheimgestellt:
Erscheine mir,
Wann dir's gefällt.
Du kennst die Frist,
Nur Du allein:
Wenn's zeitig ist,
Wird Morgen sein.

Before dew and daylight
I awoke.
Upon earth still
Lay midnight.
Before daylight and dew
I thought of you.--
The grey light of morning
Had not yet appeared.
My spirit well knows
The course of the sun;
The night passes on,
The sun comes up.
But it remains unknown to me
Whilst it laments,
When for my bosom
Its morning shall dawn;
Because my eye weeps
Without comfort,
When in the East
Your day appears to it.
I attempt in vain,
And were it upon my knees,
To draw you down to me.
From where you sit in majesty,
Yours is the benevolence
And mine the duty:
My impatience
Does not move you.
Therefore may it be
Commended unto you:
Appear to me
When it pleases you.
You know the time,
Only you alone:
When it is time,
It shall be morning.
