Vor [Tau und Tag]1 Bin ich erwacht. Auf Erden lag Noch Mitternacht. Vor [Tag und Tau]2 Gedacht ich dein.-- Das Morgengrau Gab noch nicht Schein. Wohl kennt mein Sinn Der Sonne Lauf; Die Nacht geht hin, Sie kommt herauf.

Before [dew and daylight]1 I awoke. Upon earth still Lay midnight. Before [daylight and dew]1 I thought of you.-- The grey light of morning Had not yet appeared. My spirit well knows The course of the sun; The night passes on, [The sun] comes up. But it remains unknown [to me] Whilst it laments, When for my bosom Its morning shall dawn; Because my eye weeps Without comfort, When in the East Your day appears to it. I attempt in vain, And were it upon my knees, To draw you down [to me]. From where you sit in majesty, Yours is the benevolence And mine the duty: [My] impatience Does not move you. Therefore may it be Commended unto you: Appear to me When it pleases you. You know the time, Only you alone: When it is time, It shall be morning.
