sometimes misattributed to Friedrich von Schiller (1759 - 1805) and by ? Fischer

Es tönen die Hörner von ferne herüber
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  FRE
Es tönen die Hörner von ferne herüber,
Die Lüfte des Abends umwehen mich mild;
Der Himmel verschleiert sich trüber und trüber,
Bald decket nun Dämm'rung das ganze Gefild.

Des Tages Verwirrungen, Wünsche und Sorgen,
Sie lösen sich leise im dämmernden Raum,
Doch bleibet was tief in der Seele verborgen,
Die Liebe, geheiligt im seligsten Traum.

Verhallen auch jenseits die Töne der Freude;

Das Leben versinket in stürmende Nacht;

The author is identified as "F---". Methfessel set the first three stanzas to music with the title "Schillers Lied", but if this poem appears in any Schiller anthologies, it is always linked to Methfessel's song. In the Allgemeines deutsche Lieder-Lexikon by Wilhelm Bernardi from the 1840's, however, all four stanzas are given as Song no. 690 on page 347 and the author is identified as "Fischer."
