The author is identified as "F---". Methfessel set the first three stanzas to music with the title "Schillers Lied", but if this poem appears in any Schiller anthologies, it is always linked to Methfessel's song. In the Allgemeines deutsche Lieder-Lexikon by Wilhelm Bernardi from the 1840's, however, all four stanzas are given as Song no. 690 on page 347 and the author is identified as "Fischer."
