Das harte Wort, das deine Lippe
Dem Todten redet sonder Gnade,
Zum spitzen Stein wird's, zur Klippe,
Auf deinem Paradiesespfade.
Das Liebeswort, das fromm dein Glaube
Dem Menschen redet, der geschieden,
Es grünt, als Zweig der Schattenlaube,
Für dich im Paradiesesfrieden.

The harsh word that your lips
Utter about the dead one without mercy,
It becomes a sharp stone, a cliff,
Upon your pathway to Paradise.
The loving word that your faith devoutly
Speaks of the person who has departed,
It greens as a branch of the shady arbour
For you in the peace of Paradise.
