Vom Lager stand ich mit dem Frühlicht Frühlicht auf
Und nahm hinaus in's Freie meinen Lauf,
Wo duftiggrau die Morgendämmrung lag,
Umflorend noch den rosenrothen Tag;
Mich einmal satt zu gehn in Busch und Feldern
Vom Morgen früh bis in die späte Nacht,
Und auch ein Lied zu holen in den Wäldern,
Hatt' ich zum festen Vorsatz mir gemacht.

Rein war der Himmel, bald zum Tag erhellt,
Der volle Liebespuls schlug durch die Welt;
Die Lüfte wehten und der Vogel sang,
Die Eichen wuchsen und die Quelle sprang;
Die Blumen blühten und die Früchte reiften,
Ein jeglich Gras that seinen Atemzug,
Die Berge standen und die Wolken schweiften
In gleicher Luft, die meinen Odem trug.

Ich schlenderte den lieben Tag entlang,
Im Herzen regte sich der Hochgesang;
Es brach sich Bahn der Wachtel heller Schlag,
Jedoch mein Lied, — es rang sich nicht zu Tag.
Der Mittag kam, ich lag an Silberflüssen,
Die Sonne sucht' ich in der klaren Flut
Und durfte nicht von Angesicht sie grüßen,
Der ich allein, in all dem Drang, geruht.

Die Sonne sank und ließ die Welt der Ruh,
Die Abendnebel gingen ab und zu;
Ich lag auf Bergeshöhen matt und müd,
Tief in der Brust das ungesungne Lied.

Je levai le camp aux lueurs précoces
Et je m’en fus à l’air libre
Où le parfum gris de l'aube flottait,
Enveloppant encor d’un rouge rosé le jour ;
Par monts et par vaux, résolu à marcher
Tôt matin jusque tard le soir,
J’allais m’enquérant d’une chanson dans les bois,
J’en faisais mon credo.

Pur était le ciel bientôt dans la clarté du jour,
Une pleine pulsation de vie battait au monde ;
Soufflaient les vents et chantait l’oiseau,
Poussaient les chênes et jaillissait la source.
S’épanouissaient les fleurs et mûrissaient les fruits,
Un simple brin d’herbe livrait son soupir ;
Se dressaient les montagnes, et dans les nuages
Voletait le même air que dans mon souffle.

Je flânais au long de cette chère journée,
À mon cœur pointait le chant du Très-haut;
Battu en brèche par le chant de la caille claire
Tandis que ma chanson- ne voyait pas le jour.
Midi sonna ; accosté à des rives argentées,
Je cherchais le soleil dans le flot clair
Mais ne pus me présenter à lui ni le révérer,
Moi qui seul dans ce vacarme reposait.

Le soleil couchant offrit au monde son repos,
Les brumes du soir montaient çà et là ;
Je gisais sur les hautes cimes, pâle et fatigué,
Au plus profond de ma poitrine, l’Inchanté.
