by (Agnes) Mathilde Wesendonck, née Luckemeyer (1828 - 1902)

Im Herzen trüb' und traurig
(Sung text for setting by Mihalovich)
 See original
Language: German (Deutsch)
Im Herzen trüb' und traurig
  Da grollt ein tiefes Weh,
So abgrundsvoll und schaurig,
  Als wie die tiefe See.

Und Seufzer streichen als Winde
Hinüber, herüber die Fluth,
Erinn'rung strahlet linde
Darein wie Abendgluth.

Als Schifflein segelt die Hoffnung
Von Sehnsucht getrieben vom Strand,
Es schwankt in wilder Brandung,
Stößt nimmermehr an's Land!
From a letter dated July 3, 1863
