Weine nicht! es ist vergebens!
Jede Freude dieses Lebens
Ist ein bald verschwundner Traum.
Mühe dich, es zu vergessen,
Daß du einst ein Glück besessen!
Blüthenlos verwelkt dein Baum.
Aber Hoffnung leiht dir Flügel,
Sprengt der dunkeln Zukunft Riegel,
Zeigt dir eine beßre Welt,
Giebt uns Muth in Schreckenstagen,
Hilft uns unser Leiden tragen,
Bis der Vorhang niederfällt.

Do not weep - it is futile;
Every joy of this life
Is soon a vanished dream.
You must labor to forget
that once you possessed happiness.
Bereft of blossoms, your tree shrivels!
But Hope lends wings to you,
springs open the bolts of dark Future,
shows you a better world,
gives us courage in days of terror,
helps us bear our affliction
until the curtain falls.
