Auf blauen Fluten schweifet."
Da ziehen finstre Wolken auf
Mit Sturm und ... Gewitter.
Die Blitze zucken aus der Nacht,
Die Maste springen in Splitter.
Und Wogen stürzen auf das Schiff,
So wilde, Bergen gleiche;
Verschlungen ist der Königssohn
Sammt seinem lust'gen Reiche.

Le jeune homme se tient sur le pont
Et regarde voguer ses navires,
Le soleil brille, le vent joue
Avec ses cheveux d'or.
La rame résonne, la voile se gonfle,
Les oriflammes multicolores flottent,
Chantant et jouant, des sirènes
Se balancent autour de la quille.
Il dit : « voici mon royaume,
Qui vagabonde librement et joyeusement,
Qui erre sur les flots bleus
Qui entourent la terre indolente.
Mais voilà que se lèvent de noirs nuages
Amenant tempête et orage,
Les éclairs tressaillent dans la nuit,
Les mâts volent en éclats.
Et les vagues se jettent sur le navire
Avec furie, pareilles à des montagnes ;
Le fils du roi est englouti
Tout comme son joyeux royaume.
