sometimes misattributed to Adalbert Friedner (flourished 1837) and by Moritz Gottlieb Saphir (1795 - 1858)

Die Rose
 (Sung text for setting by N. Gade)
 See original
Language: German (Deutsch)
Die Rose lag im Schlummer,
  Im grünen Gemach,
Es klopften Schmetterlinge,
  Doch wurde sie nicht wach.

Es lockte der laue Abend,
  Sie bleibet im Haus;
Es locken gold'ne Sterne,
  Sie tritt nicht heraus.

Es rollet der Donner oben,
  Sie springt nicht empor;
Es zuckt der Blitz hernieder,
  Sie hebt nicht den Flor.

Da tönt herab vom Zweige
  Ein schmerzliches Lied,
Das aus der wunden Seele
  Der Nachtigall zieht;

 ...

Da schließt das Knospenfenster
  Die Rose still auf,
Und schaut zu dem Sänger
  Erröthend hinauf;

Note: Gade's score erroneously indicates the poet as "Friedner".
