Kuulin puron solisevan, kaipa se tuli lähteeltä, kallionkolosta, laaksoa kohti se kohisi niin raikkaana ja ihmeellisen kirkkaana. En tiedä, mikä minuun meni, enkä kenen neuvosta lähdin, mutta minunkin oli pakko lähteä alas sen vartta matkasauvoineni. Alaspäin ja yhä kauemmas, ja aina puronvartta pitkin, ja yhä raikkaampana se solisi, ja yhä kirkkaammalta se puro näytti. Onko tämä minun tieni? Puro-kulta, sano, minne se johtaa? Solinallasi sinä olet lumonnut minut aivan kokonaan. Mitä minä solinasta puhun? Eihän se mitään solinaa voi olla. Vedenhaltijathan siellä laulavat syvällä alhaalla omia laulujaan. Antaapa heidän laulaa, solise sinä puro vain, minä vaellan iloisena sinun jäljessäsi ! Pyöriihän niitä myllynrattaita kaikissa kirkkaissa puroissa.
