by Émile Albert Kayenberg (1860 - 1929), as Albert Giraud
Translation by Otto Erich Hartleben (1864 - 1905)

L'Escalier
Language: French (Français)
Sur le marbre de l’escalier,
Un léger froufrou de lumière
S’irise en bleuâtre poussière,
Au tournant de chaque palier.

La Lune, d’un pas familier,
Fait, dans sa ronde coutumière,
Sur le marbre de l’escalier,
Un léger froufrou de lumière.

Et Pierrot, pour s’humilier
Devant sa pâle Emperière,
Prosterne la blanche prière
De son grand corps en espalier
Sur le marbre de l’escalier.

Text Authorship:

  • by Émile Albert Kayenberg (1860 - 1929), as Albert Giraud, "L'Escalier", appears in Pierrot lunaire

Die Estrade
(Sung text for setting by M. Kowalski)
 Matches base text
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the French (Français)
Auf den Marmorstufen der Estrade,
flüchtig raschelnd, wie mit seidnem Kleide,
tanzt der Staub in bläulich weißem Schimmer,
wirbelnd in den Kanten jeder Stiege.

Denn die Mondesgöttin wandelt leise,
leichten Schrittes die gewohnten Wege
auf den Marmorstufen der Estrade,
flüchtig raschelnd, wie mit seidnem Kleide.

In den Staub vor seine bleiche Fürstin
wirft Pierrot sich, im Gebet ersterbend.
Und da liegt der große, weiße Körper,
aufgerankt und in die Höh' gebreitet
auf den Marmorstufen der Estrade.

Composition:

Set to music by Max Kowalski (1882 - 1956), "Die Estrade", op. 4 no. 3 (1913), published 1913 [ voice and piano ], from 12 Gedichte aus Pierrot lunaire, no. 3, Berlin, N. Simrock
