Was ist Lieb? Ein Tag des Mayen,
Der im goldnem Glanz erwacht;
Hell auf froher Schäfer Reihen
Vom entwölkten Himmel lacht.
Flöten locken zu den Tänzen
Der vergnügten Mädchen Schaar;
Blumen sammeln sie zu Kränzen,
Schmücken ihrer Schäfer Haar.
Schnell verdüstert über ihnen
Sich der schwülen Sonne Blick;
Schrecken blickt aus ihren Mienen,
Schüchtern eilen sie zurück.
Regengüsse strömen nieder;
Blum' und Wiesen sind verheert;
Und der Frommen Freudenlieder
Sind in Trauerton verkehrt. --
Schau! der Friedensboge stralet
Ins erschrockne Thal herab;
Schau! der Hoffnung Freude malet
Sich auf allen Wangen ab. --
Gib, o Gott der frommen Liebe,
Uns ein ruhiges Gemüth,
Das durch Wolken, schwarz und trübe,
Ins Gefild der Hofnung sic sieht!

What is love? A day of Maytime
That wakens in a golden radiance;
That brightly laughs down upon the dances
Of happy shepherds from a cloudless sky.
To the dances flutes entice
The throng of blithe maidens;
They gather flowers for wreaths,
And adorn the hair of their shepherds.
Quickly over them the humid sun's
Gaze is darkened;
Their faces show how startled they are,
Faint-hearted they hurry back.
Rain streams down;
Flowers and meadow are ravaged;
And the songs of joy sung by the pious
Are transformed into tones of mourning. --
See! the arc of peace shines
Down into the startled valley;
See! the joy of hope is reflected
Upon all cheeks. --
Give us, oh God of pious love,
A quiet spirit
That gazes through clouds, black and dour,
Into the meadows of hope!
