Down by the Salley Gardens my love and I did meet;
She passed the Salley Gardens with little snow-white feet.
She bid me take love easy, as the leaves grow on the trees;
But I, being young and foolish, with her would not agree.
In a field by the river my love and I did stand,
And on my leaning shoulder she laid her snow-white hand.
She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs;
But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears.
Retitled "Down by the Salley Gardens" with the subtitle "An old song re-sung" when republished in Poems in 1895.
Note: "salley" is an anglicized form of the Irish word "saileach", which means willow.
Composition:
Set to music by John Edmunds (1913 - 1986), "The Salley Gardens" [ voice and piano ]

Allà als jardins dels salzes el meu amor i jo ens vàrem trobar;
ella passava pels jardins dels salzes
amb els seus petits peus blancs com la neu.
Ella em proposà de prendre l’amor amb calma,
com les fulles creixen als arbres;
però jo, jove i forassenyat, no estigué d’acord amb ella.
El meu amor érem en un camp prop del riu,
i a la meva espatlla , ella posà la seva mà blanca com la neu.
Ella em proposà de prendre la vida amb calma,
com l’herba creix a les prades;
però jo era jove i forassenyat, i ara estic ple de llàgrimes.
