Down by the Salley Gardens my love and I...
Language: English
Available translation(s): FRE FRI GER
Down by the Salley Gardens my love and I did meet;
She passed the Salley Gardens with little snow-white feet.
She bid me take [love]1 easy, as the leaves grow on the [tree]2;
But I, being young and foolish, with her [did]3 not agree.

In a field by the river my love and I did stand,
And on my leaning shoulder she laid her snow-white hand.
She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs;
But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears.

Unten bei den Salley‑Gärten traf ich...
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the English
Unten bei den Salley-Gärten traf ich mich mit meiner Geliebten;
Sie durchlief die Salley-Gärten auf ihren schneeweißen Füßchen.
Sie bat mich, [die Liebe]1 so leicht zu nehmen, wie Blätter auf den Bäumen wachsen;
Aber ich, der ich jung und töricht war, war nicht mit ihr einverstanden.

In einem Felde bei dem Flusse stand ich mit meiner Geliebten,
Und auf meine gebeugte Schulter legte sie ihre schneeweiße Hand.
Sie bat mich, das Leben so leicht zu nehmen, wie das Gras beim Wehre wächst;
Aber ich war jung und töricht, und bin jetzt voller Tränen.
