Mit der Jahreszeiten Lauf!
Ein Lenz sei der Jugend erwartendes Streben,
Es folge ein tatvoller Sommer darauf.
Ein Herbst sei die Ernte nach mühvollen Jahren,
Ein Winter das Alter – wenn wir‘s denn erfahren.
 
Doch gibt die Natur uns in ewiger Runde
Nach Winters Entbehrung vom Lenz wieder Kunde.
Du aber, Mensch, Du hoffest vergebens:
Auf den Winter Deines Lebens
Folgt kein Lenz mit Blüten rot;
Auf den Winter Deines Lebens
Folgt allein der ew'ge Tod.
