Sind die Farben fahl und blass,
Sind die Formen ganz verschwommen,
Denn das Aug‘ ist tränennass.
 
Hinterm Tränenschleier
Hätt‘ ich Dich gleichwohl erkannt;
Hab‘ auch lang nach Dir gesucht,
Doch Du bist im fernen Land.
 
Hinterm Tränenschleier
Scheint wohl fern das Leid der Welt;
Doch ich fühle um so näher
Jenes Leid, das mich befällt.

An meinem trüben Himmel
Zerteilten Wolken sich;
Ein Licht hat mir geleuchtet,
Das einem Engel glich.
 
Das Licht ist bald vergangen;
Nun leuchtet‘s Andern wohl.
Ach, wüßt‘ ich, ob es jemals
Auch mir noch leuchten soll.
 
Mein Himmel ist so trübe
Wie er es war zuvor;
Und doch erscheint er dunkler,
Weil ich das Licht verlor.

Meine Brust umschließt ein Band,
So fest, als wär‘s aus Eisen schwer;
Und wenn ich es zerreißen möcht‘,
So zieht sich‘s enger mehr und mehr.
 
Wer vermag es nur zu lösen?
Sieh, es ist ein Schloss am Band!
Und ich bin mir ganz gewiss:
Der Schlüssel ist in Deiner Hand.
 
„Ach, der Schlüssel ist verloren –
Glaube mir, es tut mir leid!
Das Band, es mag von selbst sich lösen
Irgendwann, in ferner Zeit.“

O törichter Mensch, was vergleichst Du Dein Leben
Mit der Jahreszeiten Lauf!
Ein Lenz sei der Jugend erwartendes Streben,
Es folge ein tatvoller Sommer darauf.
Ein Herbst sei die Ernte nach mühvollen Jahren,
Ein Winter das Alter – wenn wir‘s denn erfahren.
 
Doch gibt die Natur uns in ewiger Runde
Nach Winters Entbehrung vom Lenz wieder Kunde.
Du aber, Mensch, Du hoffest vergebens:
Auf den Winter Deines Lebens
Folgt kein Lenz mit Blüten rot;
Auf den Winter Deines Lebens
Folgt allein der ew'ge Tod.
