Auf dem Wege vom Tanzsaal nach Haus
Ruht auf dem Stein aus
Die hübsche Margreth.
Sie öffnet ein wenig das stramme Mieder,
Daß kühl über die weißen Glieder
Der Nachtwind weht.
Desselbigen Morgens kommt auch der Junker,
Mit Troddeln am Hute und vielem Geflunker,
Und sieht den Stein,
Und auf dem Stein das schmucke Kind;
Und wie der Blitz geschwind
Fällt ihm was ein.
Das liebe Mädchen hatte geschlafen,
Doch wie sie des Junkers Augen trafen,
Da ist sie erwacht.
Erst schreit sie auf und will feldein;
Ich denke, wir lassen die beiden allein
In der Sommernacht.

On the way home from the dance hall
The lovely Margret
Rests upon the stone.
She loosens her tight bodice a little
So that the cool night-wind may
Waft over her white limbs.
That same morning along comes as well a young squire
With baubles on his hat and many fibs,
And sees the stone,
And upon the stone, the picture-perfect child;
And as rapid as lightning
Something comes to his mind.
The dear maiden had been sleeping,
But as the squire's eyes fell upon her,
She awoke.
At first she screams and wants to run off over the fields;
I think we shall leave the two of them alone
In the summer night.
