Was die Sehnsucht weinend sich verspricht?
Ob, vor irgendeinem Weltgericht,
Sich dies rätselhafte Sein enthülle?
Hoffen soll der Mensch! Er frage nicht!
Die du so gern in heil'gen Nächten feierst
Und sanft und weich den Gram verschleierst,

O Hoffnung! Laß, durch dich empor gehoben,
Den Dulder ahnen, daß dort oben

Wenn, längst verhallt, geliebte Stimmen schweigen;

Verödet die Erinn'rung sitzt:

O hoop, ja! Laat de mens toch weer geloven,
De dulder denken dat daarboven
Een engel wel zijn tranen telt!
Als, lang verstild, geliefde stemmen zwijgen,
Als onder dode takken, twijgen
Vereenzaamd de herinn’ring kreunt:
Begeef je dan naar waar een mens droef fluistert,
En, door de diepe nacht omhuiverd,
Op weggezonken urnen steunt.
En kijkt hij op, om ’t noodlot aan te klagen,
Als, scheidend, over zijn nadagen
De laatste stralen ondergaan:
Laat dan hem om de rand der aardse dromen
De schittering op wolkenzomen
Van een nabije zon zien staan!
