Singend geschieht mir's, daß ich des gedenke,
Was ich singend vergessen wollt;
Singend geschieht mir's, daß ich mich versenke
In das, was ich nicht denken sollt.
Denn wenn die klingenden Töne hinziehen,
Kann ich's nicht bergen, kann ich nicht fliehen,
Muß ich es sagen, das sehrende Leid,
Muß ich es klagen, wie ferne wir beid,
Wie so fern wir getrennt für allewige Zeit!

While singing, it happens to me that I think of that
Which I wanted to forget in singing;
While singing, it happens to me that I immerse myself
In that of which I should not think.
For when the ringing tones flow by
I cannot hide it, I cannot flee,
I must utter it, the pain-filled sorrow,
I must lament how far we two,
How so far we are separated for all-eternal time!
