In der hohen Hall' saß König Siegfried:
"Ihr Harfner! wer weiß mir das schönste Lied?"
Und ein Jüngling trat aus der Schaar behende,
Die Harf' in der Hand, das Schwerdt an der Lende.

"Drei Lieder weiß ich; den ersten Sang,
Den hast du ja wohl vergessen schon lang:
Meinen Bruder hast du meuchlings erstochen!
Und aber: hast ihn meuchlings erstochen!

Das andre Lied, das hab' ich erdacht
In einer finstern, stürmischen Nacht:
Mußt mit mir fechten auf Leben und Sterben!
Und aber: mußt fechten auf Leben und Sterben!"

Da lehnt' er die Harfe wohl an den Tisch,
Und sie zogen Beide die Schwerdter frisch,
Und fochten lange mit wildem Schalle,
Bis der König sank in der hohen Halle.

"Nun sing' ich das dritte und schönste Lied,
Das werd' ich nimmer zu singen müd':
König Siegfried liegt in sein'm rothen Blute,
Und aber: liegt in sein'm rothen Blute!"

Note: modern German would change the following spellings: "Schaar" -> "Schar", "Schwerdt" -> "Schwert", "rothen" -> "roten"

Dans la haute salle siégeait le roi Sifrid :
« Vous, les harpistes,qui saura pour moi le plus beau chant ? »
Et un jeune homme sortit prestement de la foule,
La harpe à la main,l'épée dans la gauche :

« Je connais trois chants ; le premier chant
Que tu as bien sûr oublié depuis longtemps :
Tu as poignardé traîtreusement mon frère,
Et encore une fois, tu l'as traîtreusement poignardé !

L'autre chant que j'ai imaginé
Au cours d'une sombre et tempétueuse nuit :
Tu dois te battre avec moi, à la vie à la mort,
Et encore une fois, tu dois te battre avec moi, à la vie à la mort ! »

Alors il posa la harpe sur la table,
Et tous deux tirèrent vivement leur épée
Et ils se battirent longtemps dans un sauvage tumulte,
Jusqu'à ce que le roi s'affale dans la grande salle.

« Maintenant je chanterai le troisième et le plus beau chant,
Que je ne serai jamais las de chanter :
Le roi Sifrid gît dans son sang rouge,
Et encore une fois, gît dans son sang rouge ! »
