Augenblicke gibt es, zage, 
wo so grabesstumm die Heide,
wo der Wald den Atem anhält
wie vor namenlosem Leide,

wo die Wasser klanglos schleichen,
Blumenaugen ängstlich starren,
und mir ist, als wär das Leben all' 
versenkt in banges Harren,

und als müßt' in diese Stille
nun ein Donnerschlag erklingen
oder tief die Erd' erbeben
oder mir das Herz zerspringen.

Det finnes øyeblikk, nølende,
når heden blir gravtyst,
når skogen holder pusten
som i unevnelig lidelse,

når vannet bruser uten klang,
 og blomsterøyne stirrer engstelig,
og for meg er det som om dette livet
var holdt tilbake i engstelig venting,

og som måtte det i denne stillhet
kun klinge et tordenskrall
eller dypt jorden skjelve
eller mitt hjerte rives i stykker.
