Ob sie meiner noch gedenkt!

Language: German (Deutsch)
Ob sie meiner wohl gedenkt,
Nun von ihr mich losgerissen,
Ach, dieß Eine möcht' ich wissen:
Ob sie meiner noch gedenkt?!
Ob sie nach dem Pfad wohl blicket,
Den ich ging in heißen Thränen,
Ob sie wohl mit leisem Sehnen
Nach dem öden Pfade blickt?
Ob sie meiner wohl gedenkt,
Nun von ihr mich losgerissen,
Ach, dieß Eine möcht' ich wissen:
Ob sie meiner noch gedenkt?!
...
Ach, so zieh' in Gram versenkt
Weiter ich mit jedem Tage,
In dem Mund die bange Frage:
Ob sie meiner noch gedenkt?!
Note: the text above is taken from stanzas 1,2,1,3 of the original text.
Notes: Lang has two settings of this text, with different changes in wording relating to the repetitions, as follows:
Stanza 1, line 1, word 5 becomes "gedenket" in the repetition of both versions, but in the first version only, it is "gedenket" the first time as well.
Stanza 1, line 4, word 4 ("noch") is "wohl" the first time in the second setting (only), but "noch" in the repetition.
Stanza 3, line 4, word 4 ("noch") is "wohl" the first time in the first setting, but "noch" when the text is repeated; and in the second setting, it is "wohl" only when repeated.
Composition:
Set to music by Josephine Lang (1815 - 1880), "Ob sie meiner noch gedenkt!", 1836, stanzas 1,2,1,3 [ voice and piano ], unpublished song

Does she perhaps think of me,
Now that I have torn myself away from her;
Ah, I would like to know this one thing:
Does she perhaps think of me?!
Does she perhaps look toward the path
That I walked in hot tears,
Does she perhaps with quiet yearning
Look toward the desolate path?
Does she perhaps think of me,
Now that I have torn myself away from her;
Ah, I would like to know this one thing:
Does she perhaps think of me?!
...
Ah, thus I wander, sunk in misery,
Farther away with every day,
In my mouth the anxious question:
Does she perhaps think of me?!
