Bedächtig stieg die Nacht an's Land,
Lehnt träumend an der Berge Wand,
Ihr Auge sieht die goldne Wage nun
Der Zeit in gleichen Schalen stille ruhn;
Und kecker rauschen die Quellen hervor,
Sie singen der Mutter, der Nacht, in's Ohr
Vom Tage,
Vom heute gewesenen Tage.
Das uralt alte Schlummerlied,
Sie achtet's nicht, sie ist es müd';
Ihr klingt des Himmels Bläue süßer noch,
Der flücht'gen Stunden gleichgeschwung'nes Joch.
Doch immer behalten die Quellen das Wort,
Es singen die Wasser im Schlafe noch fort
Vom Tage,
Vom heute gewesenen Tage.

Gestaag bekruipt de nacht het land,
glijdt langzaam over 't heuvelland.
Haar ogen zien de gouden waage staan,
die tijd verdeelt, en maar laat gaan
en driftig ruisen de bronnen maar door,
zij zingen de vrouwe, de nacht, in 't oor
van uren,
van tijden, de dag van vandaag.
Dit oude, oude doezellied,
ze kent 't wel, maar luistert niet:
zij hoort het blauwsel van de hemelboog,
dat met haar als vluchtige tijd vervloog.
Maar altijd weer stromen de bronnen maar door
en zingen de beken al slapend in koor
van uren,
van tijden, de dag van vandaag.
