Lehnt träumend an der Berge Wand,
Ihr Auge sieht die goldne Wage nun 
Der Zeit in gleichen Schalen stille ruhn;
  Und [kecker]3 rauschen die Quellen hervor,
  Sie singen der Mutter, der Nacht, in's Ohr
    Vom Tage,
  Vom heute gewesenen Tage.

Das uralt alte Schlummerlied,
Sie achtet's nicht, sie ist es müd';
Ihr klingt des Himmels Bläue süßer noch,
Der flücht'gen Stunden gleichgeschwung'nes Joch.
  Doch immer behalten die Quellen das Wort,
  Es singen die Wasser im Schlafe noch fort
    Vom Tage, 
  Vom heute gewesenen Tage.

Quieta è calata la notte sulla terra,
Sognando si adagia sulla parete del monte,
i suoi occhi ora vedono la bilancia d'oro
del tempo sostare quieta in perfetto equilibrio;
più vive mormorano le fonti
e cantano all'orecchio della loro madre, la notte,
del giorno, 
del giorno che è passato.

L'antica, eterna, ninna nanna
lei non ascolta, ormai se ne è stancata;
Più dolce a lei suona l'azzurro del cielo
il peso sempre uguale delle ore fuggitive.
Ma sempre continuano a parlare le fonti
e pure dormendo le acque continuano a cantare
del giorno, 
del giorno che è passato.
