Lieb' Liebchen, leg's Händchen aufs Herze mein; -
Ach, hörst du, wie's pochet im Kämmerlein?
Da hauset ein Zimmermann schlimm und arg,
Der zimmert mir einen Totensarg.
Es hämmert und klopfet bei Tag und bei Nacht;
Es hat mich schon längst um den Schlaf gebracht.
Ach! sputet Euch, Meister Zimmermann,
Damit ich balde schlafen kann.
Note: first titled "Der Zimmermann"; later titled "Holzmeyer"
Composition:
Set to music by Robert Franz (1815 - 1892), "Lieb' Liebchen!", op. 17 no. 3, published 1853 [ voice and piano ], Leipzig, Whistling

My dear, lay your hand here upon my heart, --
You hear how it thumps in the chamber part?
A carpenter dwells in there wickedly,
He's building a coffin just for me.
He bangs and he hammers all night and all day,
He's kept me forever awake this way,
Come on, Mister Carpenter, make it fast,
So I can get to sleep at last.
