Såmangen kvæld jeg stod,
Med havet ved min fod,
Og stirred fuld af længsel mod det fjerne,
Hvor nu så skær og klar
På skjulte vingepar
Sig løftes stille nattens tvillingstjerne.

Når mødtes ved de to,
Som i så dyb en ro,
Samblinkende henvandre deres bane?
Får også jeg en ven,
En sikker følgesvend,
Og kommer han fra havet som en svane?

Han lander vist engang
Med sol og strengeklang,
Derom der hvisker noget i mit indre.
Men trygt jeg bie vil,
Til tvillingstjernens ild
I mine længslers nat får lov at tindre.

Am Abend oft ich stand,
Den Fuß an Meeres Rand,
Und blickte voll Verlangen in die Ferne,
Wo nun so hell und klar
Auf dunkler Schwingen Paar
Geh'n auf in stiller Nacht die Zwillingssterne.
 
Wann trafen sich die zwei,
daß sie so froh und frei
gemeinsam funkeln nun auf ihrer Bahn?
Ein Freund, winkt er auch mir,
Der treu mich schützet hier?
Und wird vom Meer er kommen wie ein Schwan?
 
Vielleicht kommt er an Land
Mit Sonn' und Streicherklang,
Es flüstert eine Stimm' in meinem Innern.
Drum harre ich voll Mut,
bis Zwillingssterne' Glut
in meines Sehnens Nacht beginnt zu schimmern.
