by Aleksandr Sergeyevich Pushkin (1799 - 1837)
Translation by A. Wolfahrt

Черкесская песня
Language: Russian (Русский)
В реке бежит гремучий вал;
В горах безмолвие ночное:
Казак усталый задремал,
Склонясь на копие стальное.
Не спи, казак: во тьме ночной,
Чеченец ходит за рекой.

Казак плывет на челноке,
Влача по дну речному сети.
Казак, утонешь ты в реке,
Как тонут маленькие дети,
Купаясь жаркою порой:
Чеченец ходит за рекой.

На берегу заветных вод
Цветут богатые станицы;
Веселый пляшет хоровод.
Бегите русские певицы;
Спешите, красные, домой:
Чеченец ходит за рекой.

Tscherkessenlied
 (Sung text for setting by L. Maurer)
 Matches base text
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Russian (Русский)
 Es wallt des Stromes Donnerflut,
 Die Berge stehn im Mondenglanze
 Und der Kosak ermüdet ruht,
 Gelehnt an seine Eisenlanze.
 Schlaf nicht, Kosak, geh' deinen Gang:
 Der Bergsohn schleicht den Strom entlang.

 Es wiegt sich der Kosak im Boot
 Und zieht sein Netz aus Stromesgrunde.
 Kosak, du fischest dir den Tod,
 Der Fluß hat seine böse Stunde.
 Hörst du noch nicht des Köchers Klang:
 Der Bergsohn schleicht den Strom entlang.

 An erbgeweihten Wassern blühn
 Reichlockende Kosakenstädtchen
 Den muntern Reigen sieht man ziehn.
 O, fliehet, flieht, ihr Russenmädchen,
 Laßt, Liebliche, jetzt Tanz und Sang:
 Der Bergsohn schleicht den Strom entlang.
