Que n'as-tu comme moi pris naissance au village !
Que n'as-tu pour tout bien un modeste troupeau !
Le palais où tu cours un brillant héritage
Valent-ils le bonheur que t'offre le hameau ?

Si jamais au village un regret te ramène,
Si tes pas incertains s'égarent au vallon,
Tu verras nos deux noms gravés sur le vieux chêne,
Et le cœur qui t'aima3> , couvert d'un froid gazon.

Comme la fleur des bois qui se dessèche et tombe,
Le soir d'un jour brûlant verra finir mon sort ;
Et notre bon pasteur écrira sur ma tombe :
« Olivier ! ne plains pas la douleur qui s'endort. »

Note: this text first appeared in 1815 in Souvenir des Ménestrels with the music of Quinebaux under the title "L'Abandon"; in 1819 under the title "Romance"; in 1832 under the title of "Plaintes" in Nouveau keepsake pour 1832; and in 1842 under the title "Le Hameau" in Poésies (Paris, Charpentier).
