Ella pareva un sogno di poeta;
Vestìa sempre di bianco, e avea nel viso
La calma d'una sfinge d'oriente.

Le cadea sino ai fianchi il crin di seta;
Trillava un canto nel suo breve riso,
Era di statua il bel corpo indolente.

Amò--non riamata. In fondo al core,
Tranquilla in fronte, custodì la ria
Fiamma di quell'amor senza parole.

Ma quel desìo la consumò--ne l'ore
D'un crepuscol d'ottobre ella morìa,
Come verbena quando manca il sole.

Sie schien so schön wie eines Dichters Traum,
In Weiß gekleidet immer, und es lag
Die Ruhe einer Sphinx in ihren Mienen.

Ihr seid'nes Haar ging bis zum Kleidersaum,
Ihr Lachen trillerte wie Lerchenschlag,
Ein Bildwerk ihre edlen Formen schienen.

Sie liebte - ohne Gegenlieb' zu finden
Und barg mit heitrer Stirn die Herzenswunde,
Hat schweigend ihre inn're Glut verhehlt.

Jedoch die Sehnsucht ließ dahin sie schwinden;
Sie starb an einer herbstlich trüben Stunde
Wie die Verbena, der die Sonne gefehlt.
