Gott! ein Gott! ach, irrend such' ich ihn!
 (Sung text for setting by F. Himmel)
 Matches original text
Language: German (Deutsch)
Gott! ein Gott! ach, irrend such' ich ihn! --
Draußen, in der blaugewölbten Halle
Seines Tempels, such' ich seine Spur;
Suche Hoffnung, Trost und Ruh', und falle
Weinend in die Arme der Natur.
An die Sterne heften meine Klagen
Manches tiefe, seufzende Warum?
Keine Antwort spricht aus meinen Fragen;
Alles schweigt, die Mitternacht ist stumm.

Composition:

    Set to music by Friedrich Heinrich Himmel (1765 - 1814), "Gott! ein Gott! ach, irrend such' ich ihn!", 1814, published 1880, from Gesänge aus Tiedge's Urania, no. 4

Text Authorship:

  • by Christoph August Tiedge (1752 - 1841), no title, appears in Urania, in Erster Gesang (Klagen des Zweiflers)
