Es sehnt sich das Herz
Nach Lust und Schmerz,
Und  nimmer kann es ruhig bleiben,
Muß unstät auf den Wogen treiben. 

Es trotzet und wagt,
Es zittert und zagt,
Will oft herab den Himmel ziehen,
Oft schüchtern in die Erde fliehen. 

 ... 

Es zürnt und vergibt,
Es glaubet und liebt,
Und seinem Sehnen, seinem Hoffen,
Stehn stets die Himmelspforten offen.

Heut glühend und roth
Und morgen todt!
In Asche ist es still versunken,
Doch glimmt noch drinn ein Götterfunken.

Het hunkert, het hart,
Naar lust en naar smart,
En nimmer kan het rustig blijven,
’t Moet onvast op de golven drijven.

Het steigert en waagt,
Het beeft en versaagt,
Wil pakken vaak de hoge luchten,
Vaak angstig in de aarde vluchten.

Het toornt en bezint,
Gelooft en bemint,
En voor zijn hunk’ring, voor zijn hopen
Staan steeds de hemelpoorten open!

Nu gloeiend en rood
En morgen dood!
Tot lijkas is het stil verzonken,
Toch zie ‘k daarin nog godenvonken.
