Liegt eine Stadt im Tale,
ein blasser Tag vergeht;
es wird nicht lange dauern mehr,
bis weder Mond noch Sterne
nur noch Nacht am Himmel steht.

Von allen Bergen drücken
Nebel auf die Stadt;
es dringt kein Dach, kein Hof noch Haus,
kein Laut aus ihrem Rauch heraus,
kaum Türme noch und Brücken.

Doch als den Wandrer graute,
da ging ein Lichtlein auf im Grund;
und aus dem Rauch, dem Nebel
begann ein leiser Lobgesang
aus Kindermund.

Laaksossa lepää hiljainen kaupunki,
kelmeä päivä painuu kohti iltaa.
Ei kestä enää kauan, kun taivaalla
ei enää näy kuuta eikä tähtiäkään;
siellä vallitsee vain yö.

Ympäröiviltä vuorilta valuu
sumua kaupungin ylle,
sen läpi ei näy yhtään kattoa, pihaa eikä taloa,
sen huurujen läpi ei kuulu ääntäkään,
tornit ja sillatkin erottuvat vain vaivoin.

Mutta kun vaeltaja oli kauhuissaan,
syttyi pieni valo hänen sydämessään;
kun sumun ja usvan läpi
alkoi kuulua hiljainen kiitoslaulu
lapsen suusta.
