Schlummerlied

Language: German (Deutsch)
Steiget hernieder auf gold'ner Spur
Schweigend der Abend zur blumigen Flur,
Grüßen die Sterne so silbern und klar
Freundlich dein schlafendes Aeugleinpaar;
Schlumm're süß! schlumm're süß!
Es wachen die Engel im Paradies.
...
Steiget, ihr Elfen der Blumen, empor,
Singet dem Knaben ein Schlummerlied vor!
Steigt aus der Kelche süß duftigem Raum,
Webt ihm lieblich den goldnen Traum:
Schlumm're süß! schlumm're süß!
Es wachen die Engel im Paradies.
...
Bis dann die Rose sich wieder erschließt,
Jubelnd die Lerche den Morgen begrüßt,
Und bis der Blümelein Frühlingsgesang
Freudig der Sonne entgegen klang:
Schlumm're süß! schlumm're süß!
Es wachen die Engel im Paradies.

When the evening, upon a scented path, beguilingly
Rocks the golden meadow to sleep,
The stars silverly and clearly send a friendly
Greeting to your sleeping eyes;
Slumber sweetly! slumber sweetly!
The angels in paradise are keeping watch.
...
Ye elves of the flowers, arise,
Sing a slumber song to my little boy!
Arise from the sweetly scented calyces,
Beautifully weave for him a golden dream:
Slumber sweetly! slumber sweetly!
The angels in paradise are keeping watch.
...
Slumber sweetly! slumber sweetly!
The angels in paradise are keeping watch.

Translations of title(s):
"Schlummerlied" = "Slumber song"
"Wieget der Abend auf duftiger Spur" = "When, upon a scented track, the evening sways"
Translator’s note: In the original poem the gender of the sleeping child could be either masculine or feminine. I have chosen to use the masculine pronoun in my translation, since the child is a boy in Kücken's text.
