Ho reknar Dag og Stund og seine Kveld
til Sundag kjem; han hev so trufast lova,
at um det regnde Smaastein yver Fjell,
so skal dei finnast der i "Gjærtarstova".
Men Sundag kjem og gjeng med Regn og Rusk;
ho eismal sìt og græt attunder Busk.

Som Fuglen, saarad under varme Veng
so Blode tippar lik den heite Taare,
ho dreg seg sjuk og skjelvande i Seng,
og vrid seg Natti lang i Graaten saare.
Det slit i Hjarta og det brenn paa Kinn.

Ella conta els dies i les hores i els vespres inacabables
fins que arribi diumenge; ha promès tan lleialment
que fins i tot si cauen rocs des del cim de la muntanya
es trobaran en la cabana del pastor.
Però el diumenge arriba i se’n va,  amb pluja i boira;
ella seu sola, plorant, sota els arbusts.

Com un ocell, ferit sota les ales
degota sang, així cauen les seves cálides llàgrimes.
S’arrossega malalta i tremolosa cap a casa i cap al llit,
i s’agita i sanglota durant tota la nit.
