Set to music by Josephine Lang (1815 - 1880), "Seliger Glaube", 1868 [ voice and piano ]

When I a song in quiet strains
Sing out into the night,
My song, that for you alone,
I sang and created,
Then the stars greet me,
Then a whispering zephyr passes
Through trees and bushes, as if I could hear you
Walking in the silence out there.
I listen--then it is as if a breath
Closes my lips
As if you had suddenly
Taken your song from my lips with a kiss.
