Auch in diesen dunklen Stunden,
Liebe Freunde, laßt mich gelten;
Ob ich's hell, ob trüb gefunden,
Nie will ich das Leben schelten.

Sonnenschein und Ungewitter
Sind desselben Himmels Mienen;
Schicksal soll, ob süß ob bitter,
Mir als liebe Speise dienen.

Seele geht verschlungene Pfade,
Lernet ihre Sprache lesen!
Morgen preist sie schon als Gnade,
Was ihr heute Qual gewesen.

Sterben können nur die Rohen,
Andre will die Gottheit lehren,
Aus dem Niedern, aus dem Hohen
Seelenhaften Sinn zu nähren.

Erst auf jenen letzten Stufen
Dürfen wir uns Ruhe gönnen,
Wo wir, väterlich gerufen,
Schon den Himmel schauen können.

Et même en ces heures sombres,
Chers amis, écoutez-moi bien;
Que je trouve la vie limpide ou trouble,
Jamais je ne la blâmerai.

Lumière du soleil et tempête
Sont les mêmes aspects du ciel;
Qu'il soit doux ou amer le destin
Est pour moi  un savoureux repas.

L'âme suit des chemins sinueux,
Apprenez à lire son discours !
Elle loue déjà demain comme une grâce
Ce qui aujourd'hui lui fut tourment.

Seules les brutes peuvent mourir,
Les autres enseigneront le divin,
Pour du vil, du noble,
Nourrir la pensée de la spiritualité.

Ce n'est que sur cette dernière marche
Que nous pouvons nous accorder du repos,
Là où appelés paternellement,
Nous  pouvons déjà contempler le ciel.
