Im Flackerlicht der Lampen, und ich flechte
Gern meiner Lieder fiebernd Rot darein.
Sieh, Liebste, wie sich dort die Jugend drängt

J'aime ces nuits multicolores éclairées
Par la lumière vacillante des lampes, et j'y tisse
Avec plaisir le rouge fiévreux de mes chants.
Vois, bien-aimée , comme ici la jeunesse se presse
Aux danses tardives, et comme pour nous seul
Le croissant de lune flotte dans la fumée des flambeaux.
En ces nuits mon cœur tremblant se tourne
Avec tourment et volupté vers mon pays et ma jeunesse,
Et bat au rythme des mélodies amoureuses.
Mais mes yeux contemplent cette lune étrangère
Suivre dans une barque d'argent un chemin sûr,
Et ils sont comme habités par la solitude.

Regarde ici ! La foule en blanc onduler dans la danse
Et rayonner de plaisir, et jeter en l'air la couronne de feu
Avec l'exultation d'une joie éphémère.
Pourtant c'est comme si ma jeunesse ici,
Dans la suave odeur d'une douce brise étrangère,
Poursuivait le jeu ancien dans cette nouvelle danse.
