Dei segja no, verdi skal vera so vond,
og sant nog det ofta kann finnast;
men vistnok me sågo ei fagnadfull stund
langt oftar', en sjølve me minnast.
Me tenkja for kort 
og venta for stort,
og difyre kjenna me ofta skort.

Um endå i heimen er trældom og tvang
og folk, som for store vil vera,
um sanning og rett verte heft i sin gang
og småfolk få skjemder aa bæra,
so sjå me då tidt, 
det teiknar sig blidt,
at umbot vil koma, der alt var for stridt.

Høgt upp yver alle dei herrarne små
er ein med eit starkare rike;
han læter sitt ljus og sin varme nå
til fåtøke folk som til rike.
Han giv utan skil, 
når timen er til;
han giv sine gåvor til kven, han vil.
